Ghana’s U-20 national team head coach, Desmond Ofei, has expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the group stage draw for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Black Satellites have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and a yet-to-be-determined team from the UNIFFAC region. Notably, this draw means Ghana will not face Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in the initial phase of the tournament.
Reflecting on the draw, Coach Ofei stated, “We’re happy that we’re not in Group B because that’s a very interesting group. I feel like we’re in a position where we can control the narrative of this tournament from our perspective.”
Group B, often referred to as the “Group of Death,” comprises Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa—teams recognized for their strong footballing traditions. Ghana’s avoidance of this challenging group is seen as a favorable outcome, potentially easing their path in the tournament’s early stages.
However, Coach Ofei also acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that being in a five-team group requires playing an additional match compared to other groups. He emphasized the importance of managing the situation effectively to ensure the team’s success.
The 2025 U-20 AFCON is scheduled to commence on April 26, with the final match slated for May 18. As preparations continue, the Black Satellites aim to leverage their group placement to advance confidently in the competition.
