United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has pledged its support for the African Union (AU) Peace Fund by donating a substantial $500,000. This donation aligns with UBA’s ongoing commitment to promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
The contribution was made to support the AU’s efforts outlined in its ambitious Africa Agenda 2063, which aims to unite the continent, promote conflict resolution, and ensure long-term stability. The donation ceremony took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with Dagmawit Moges Bekele, Director of the AU Peace Fund Secretariat, and Tony Elumelu, Group Chairman of UBA, in attendance.
The African Union Peace Fund plays a critical role in financing mediation, preventive diplomacy, and rapid responses to conflicts across Africa. It is a vital instrument for strengthening institutional capacities and resolving disputes before they escalate, and UBA’s donation will further bolster these efforts. The bank’s support is a testament to its belief in the interconnectedness of economic growth and regional stability.
During the ceremony, the Chairman of the Executive Management Committee of the AU Peace Fund, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, emphasized that peace and development go hand in hand. He lauded UBA for demonstrating its commitment to Africa’s growth through sustainable investments in peace and security. “Peace is synonymous with resources; if we want development and stability, we must achieve peace,” Mahamat stated.
UBA’s Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, highlighted the importance of corporate institutions in shaping Africa’s future. He stated that by investing in peace and security, UBA is fostering an environment where businesses, communities, and nations can prosper. Elumelu reaffirmed that UBA is dedicated to advancing sustainable development and improving the quality of life for Africans, emphasizing that economic prosperity is inseparable from peace and security.
With a presence in over 20 African countries, UBA is a strong advocate for the continent’s potential, emphasizing that peace is the foundation for development. Elumelu commended the African Union for its dedication to promoting peace and security, and reiterated UBA’s commitment to deeper collaboration with the AU to continue building a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
