The United States has sanctioned entities in Iran and Russia accused of attempting to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election. The U.S. Treasury Department announced the sanctions on Tuesday, targeting a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and an organization linked to Russia’s GRU, its military intelligence agency. These entities are accused of using disinformation to influence American voters and stir political unrest.
The U.S. government says these actions are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the election process. By targeting U.S. institutions and election systems, Iran and Russia aimed to deepen political divisions and manipulate the electorate. “The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy,” the Treasury statement read, sending a clear message to foreign powers.
Russia’s embassy in Washington quickly rejected the accusations. They denied any involvement in the U.S. election, calling the claims “malicious slander.” The Russian spokesperson reiterated that President Vladimir Putin has always respected U.S. sovereignty.
Iran has not yet responded to the sanctions. Its mission to the United Nations in New York has remained silent.
The sanctions highlight a rising concern about foreign interference in U.S. elections. As the 2024 race heats up, both Russia and Iran continue to be seen as threats to the integrity of American democracy.
