Social commentator and activist Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has responded defiantly to a court order for his arrest over alleged defamation of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. The controversial critic, who has built a reputation for calling out perceived injustices, insists the legal action against him is a calculated attempt to silence his voice.
In a video statement, VeryDarkMan accused the judiciary of being compromised, alleging that certain judges and lawyers are involved in what he described as “forum-shopping” to secure favorable rulings. He claimed the arrest warrant was issued unfairly despite his active participation in legal proceedings and stated that he is currently outside Nigeria. He further argued that he has never missed any of his scheduled court appearances and questioned the legitimacy of the order, insisting that it was a ploy to suppress his activism.
The outspoken critic also revealed that on the same day the warrant was issued, another court in Nyanya granted an injunction barring him from discussing Mercy Chinwo and her music label boss, Eezee Tee. He claimed this legal maneuver was another attempt to gag him, warning that he would resist all efforts to silence him. According to him, the judiciary’s actions point to a deeper conspiracy aimed at ensuring his downfall.
“This judiciary cannot shut me down,” he declared in his video response. “There is a plot to silence me, but I will resist it. Instead, I will expose everyone involved, those paying for these rulings, those manipulating the system to ensure my arrest.” He also criticized the legal proceedings, questioning how one lawyer could file six different cases before the same magistrate in a single day, leading to his arrest warrant.
His statement has further fueled public discourse, with supporters and critics alike weighing in on the controversy. While some view the court’s actions as a necessary step to curb online defamation, others see it as an attempt to use legal means to suppress dissent. The case has also sparked debates over the growing influence of social media personalities in Nigeria and their role in holding public figures accountable.
VeryDarkMan remains adamant that he is being targeted unfairly. He alleged that certain individuals want to create a spectacle by having him arrested upon his return to Nigeria, hoping that the public perception would shift in favor of Mercy Chinwo. However, he maintains that even if he is handcuffed and taken into custody, it will not change the fact that, in his view, there has been an abuse of power and influence.
The legal battle between VeryDarkMan, Mercy Chinwo, and her associates is far from over, and the developments in the coming days will determine how the matter unfolds. Observers are keen to see if the activist will return to Nigeria to face the charges or continue his defiant stance from abroad.
