Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has advised the club to steer clear of pursuing Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen in the next transfer window, urging them to prioritize bolstering their defence instead. Wright-Phillips emphasized the need for an experienced defender to fill the void left by Thiago Silva, whose departure has left Chelsea vulnerable at the back.
Speaking to Sportscasting, Wright-Phillips acknowledged Osimhen’s talent and potential impact in the Premier League but insisted that Chelsea’s primary issue lies in their defensive frailties. “Victor Osimhen would be a top player in the Premier League, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the striker position is where Chelsea should be prioritising in the next few transfer windows,” he said.
The Blues had previously been linked with Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli during the summer transfer window. However, Wright-Phillips believes Chelsea’s attacking lineup is sufficient and that their focus should shift toward addressing defensive weaknesses.
“They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn’t replace him. I think they need more experience in the defence rather than in the striker position right now,” he added.
The former England international argued that Chelsea’s current struggles stem from conceding goals rather than a lack of scoring ability. “They are not struggling to score goals. That is not a problem for them right now. The problem is they are conceding goals. If they can cut some of those mistakes, then again, we see a different Chelsea,” he concluded.
As Chelsea continues to navigate their season, Wright-Phillips’ comments highlight the club’s need for strategic recruitment to regain their defensive solidity and challenge for top honors once again. Whether the Blues will heed his advice in the upcoming transfer windows remains to be seen.
