Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has lashed out at Rio Ferdinand, calling him a “clown” after the former Manchester United defender criticized his comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The heated exchange began after Carragher suggested that Mohamed Salah’s participation in AFCON could hurt his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or. Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, the Sky Sports pundit downplayed AFCON’s significance compared to European competitions.
Responding on his “Vibe With Five” podcast, Ferdinand disagreed with Carragher’s stance, urging FIFA to elevate AFCON’s status to match the European Championship and Copa America.
“I understand what Jamie’s saying, but I don’t agree with it. That’s the majority’s fault and it’s not right,” Ferdinand argued.
He added, “FIFA should implement language that ensures AFCON holds the same value as the Euros and Copa America. If Salah won AFCON, it wouldn’t affect the Ballon d’Or votes, and that’s absolutely wrong.”
Unimpressed by Ferdinand’s comments, Carragher hit back in a fiery response on Instagram, accusing Ferdinand of “playing to the gallery.”
“I didn’t say that, you clown. Stop playing to the gallery like you always do,” Carragher retorted.
Mohamed Salah has come close to AFCON glory twice, finishing as a runner-up with Egypt in 2017 and 2021. Despite his exceptional club performances, his international record has been viewed as a missing piece in his pursuit of football’s top individual honors.
The ongoing debate highlights long-standing concerns about how African football is perceived globally and whether players from the continent receive equal recognition in the Ballon d’Or race.
