As the festive season approaches, Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has called on Nigerians to take advantage of free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide. In a statement released on Sunday by Mrs. Toyin Aderibigbe, NACA’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, the agency emphasized the importance of knowing one’s HIV status as a step toward safeguarding health during the holidays.
Dr. Ilori highlighted that while HIV remains a significant public health challenge, advancements in testing and treatment have transformed the diagnosis from a life-threatening condition to a manageable one. “Early diagnosis can ensure access to lifesaving medication and a healthier, longer life,” she said.
Recognizing the increased social activities during the Yuletide season, the NACA boss urged Nigerians to prioritize safe practices. “Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, continue to uphold it as the safest option,” she advised.
She stressed that ignorance is no longer an excuse in the fight against HIV, as access to testing, education, and preventative tools is widely available. “This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing centre to know your HIV status,” she urged.
Dr. Ilori reiterated NACA’s commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria. “Let us work together to create a healthier, happier Nigeria,” she said, encouraging Nigerians to use this season as an opportunity to prioritize their health and well-being.
NACA’s message serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to maintain safe health practices during the holidays and beyond, working toward a future free of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
