God’s wisdom often defies human understanding, as evidenced in the life of Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). His story is a testament to the fact that success does not always follow the conventional paths people expect, nor does it rely on the circumstances of one’s birth. While many may look at material wealth or nobility of birth as signs of greatness, God sees beyond these and often chooses individuals based on their unique purpose in life.
Born into a humble background in Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State, Zacch Adedeji’s early life seemed destined for simplicity. His father, a cocoa farmer, had hoped his firstborn would one day help manage the family farm. However, God had a greater plan. Zacch’s life journey would take him far beyond the cocoa fields of Iwo Ate town, pushing him toward a path that would see him become one of Nigeria’s most influential tax leaders.
Despite the lack of a silver spoon at birth, Zacch was determined to forge a brighter future. While assisting his father on the farm, he also excelled in academics, eventually pursuing a degree in accounting. His academic journey took him from the Federal Polytechnic in Ede, where he graduated with a distinction in accountancy, to Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, where he graduated with a first-class honours degree in management and accounting.
Zacch’s professional career began at Procter & Gamble (P&G), where his remarkable financial acumen soon earned him recognition. He saved the company hundreds of millions of dollars, contributing significantly to its profitability. This feat led to his selection for an advanced business course in Switzerland, where he shared his innovative strategies. By the time he reached the management cadre at P&G, he had already proven himself a young visionary in corporate finance, eventually rising to the role of Corporate Finance Manager for West Africa.
It was through his work at P&G that Zacch met the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the former Governor of Oyo State, who took an immediate interest in his potential. This meeting proved pivotal in his career, transitioning Zacch from the private sector to public service. At the age of 33, he was appointed as the Finance Commissioner for Oyo State, where he made remarkable strides in improving the state’s revenue generation, increasing the Internally Generated Revenue from N600 million to N2 billion.
Later, as the Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, Zacch’s expertise helped reform the sugar industry, boosting its productivity and standards. His work in both the public and private sectors, coupled with his strong leadership, made him a natural choice for his appointment as the Special Adviser on Revenue to President Bola Tinubu.
As a devout Christian, Zacch believes in the power of positive words and sees his work at the helm of FIRS as not just a job, but a divine mission. His statement, made years ago during his visits to FIRS offices, “Someday, I would like to work in this organisation and contribute to its transformation,” has since become a reality. Under his leadership, FIRS has experienced an unprecedented transformation, surpassing its tax revenue targets and raising the bar for Nigeria’s fiscal future.
In 2023, FIRS exceeded its revenue goals, contributing to the government’s new tax revenue target of N19.4 trillion for 2024. Zacch’s leadership has proved instrumental in driving the nation’s tax collection to new heights, a significant feat in the context of Nigeria’s economic reliance on oil exports.
What truly sets Zacch apart, however, is his humility. Despite his impressive achievements, he has remained grounded and connected with both his colleagues and the public. His humility is one of the traits that endears him to all who know him, from his colleagues to the citizens he serves. His ability to remain humble despite being at the pinnacle of Nigeria’s tax system speaks volumes about his character and leadership style.
As Zacch turns 47, his journey is a remarkable story of resilience, leadership, and the extraordinary impact that one individual can have on a nation’s fiscal future. With his exceptional financial expertise, humble spirit, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s growth, the future indeed looks brighter for the nation, and FIRS, under his leadership, is sure to continue exceeding expectations.
The path ahead for Zacch Adedeji is undoubtedly filled with more opportunities to elevate Nigeria’s fiscal policy and tax collection system. His vision, determination, and humility are set to shape the future of Nigeria’s economy for years to come.
May God continue to strengthen him, and may his leadership inspire many more young Nigerians to believe in their ability to bring about positive change, regardless of their background.
