Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has vowed that Ukraine will do everything in 2025 to end Russia’s nearly three-year-long invasion. In his New Year address, just before midnight, Zelensky promised that Ukraine would fight with all its strength to stop Russia. We know that peace will not be given to us as a gift, but we will do everything to stop Russia and end the war, he said.
2024 was a tough year for Ukraine. The country lost seven times more territory to Russia than in 2023. The Ukrainian army is facing a better-resourced Russian force, and concerns are growing about losing U.S. military and political support. When Donald Trump takes office, he has promised to end the conflict in 24 hours, raising fears that Ukraine may have to give up land to Russia for peace.
Despite these challenges, Zelensky remains resolute. He emphasized that Ukraine must continue to fight for a stronger nation, both on the battlefield and in future peace talks. Every day in the coming year, I, and all of us, must fight for a Ukraine that is strong enough, he declared.
As the Biden administration prepares to leave office, nearly $6 billion in military aid has been pledged to Ukraine. However, with the uncertainty of Trump’s presidency ahead, Ukraine is bracing for what comes next. The fight for peace and sovereignty continues.
