War on Smuggling, Ogun Customs Seize Over 1,100 Parcels of Cannabis and Thousands of Rice Bags

Customs Seize Smuggled Goods Worth Over N229m in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has seized smuggled goods worth over N229 million. Acting Area Controller Mohammed Salisu announced the operation during a press briefing in Idiroko, Ogun State.

Salisu revealed that officers intercepted 2,169 bags of foreign rice, 1,128 parcels of cannabis weighing 1,109.3kg, and 4,360 cartons of imported shoes. They also seized 21 bales of used clothes, 166 pneumatic tyres, 250 kegs of petrol, 20 smuggling vehicles, and a Toyota Highlander.

The seizures occurred at smuggling hotspots, including Idiroko, Ilaro, and Abeokuta. Salisu credited the success to strategic intelligence, heightened surveillance, and public collaboration.

He warned that smuggling undermines Nigeria’s food security and local production. “Rice smuggling disrupts our economy. It is pure economic sabotage,” Salisu said. He also highlighted the dangers of cannabis, linking it to crime and public safety risks.

Salisu emphasized the health hazards of used clothes and their impact on Nigeria’s struggling textile industry. He vowed to bring offenders to justice, urging smugglers to stop or face severe consequences.

The Customs chief thanked the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership. He also praised his officers’ resilience and encouraged them to remain disciplined and vigilant.

Salisu reassured traders and citizens that Customs operations focus only on offenders. He promised to encourage lawful trade to boost the economy.

He called on journalists to educate the public about smuggling’s dangers. “Together, we can protect our economy, ensure safety, and uphold the law,” Salisu said.

This operation highlights Customs’ commitment to fighting smuggling and supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.
