The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a viral report claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, instructed citizens to physically assault officers requesting to search their phones. The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the report as “entirely false” and without any basis in reality.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Adejobi clarified that the IGP has never issued such directives and emphasized the importance of addressing police misconduct through lawful channels. The IGP has not issued any such directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers. Instead, he has called on citizens to report instances of police misconduct through appropriate channels, he stated.
Adejobi further reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability and fostering trust between the police and the communities they serve. He urged the public to remain cautious of misinformation and verify any claims through credible sources.

The statement also provided helplines and contact information for citizens to report police misconduct:
- Phone: +2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786
- Social Media: @PoliceNG on X (formerly Twitter), @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram
- Email: pressforabuja@police.gov.ng
- Website: npf.gov.ng
Adejobi encouraged citizens to utilize these channels rather than resorting to violence, stressing the importance of maintaining the rule of law.
The Nigeria Police Force continues to advocate for a cooperative relationship with the public, aiming to strengthen trust and accountability while ensuring that any cases of misconduct are addressed appropriately.
