The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced a comprehensive investigation into the airstrikes that mistakenly targeted two villages in Sokoto State, leading to the deaths of 10 civilians and injuries to many others. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a fighter jet mistakenly bombed Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area (LGA) around 7:00 am.
Locals reported that the airstrikes, which were intended for Lakurawa terrorists in the area, instead hit innocent civilians, killing both humans and animals and causing significant damage to homes. The residents stated that they had been unaware of the military operation, and many were shocked by the unexpected destruction.
A statement issued by the joint media coordinator for the operation, Abubakar Abdullahi, confirmed that the airstrikes targeted locations linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group. Abdullahi emphasized that all military actions are based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions designed to ensure the precision of attacks while minimizing harm to civilians.
In response to the incident, NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, assured that the military would conduct a full investigation into the reports of civilian casualties. He stated that the airstrikes were carried out following credible intelligence from multiple sources, supported by confirmatory aerial surveillance. However, he acknowledged the concerns raised by the local community and confirmed that any harm to civilians would be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
Akinboyewa pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, reinforcing the NAF’s commitment to protecting civilian lives while carrying out counter-terrorism operations.
