The Shuwa Arab community in Borno State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, about the arrest and detention of Attom Magira. Magira is the 2023 Borno Central Senatorial candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Magira was arrested on December 22 by officers from the crack unit of the Borno State police command. The petition, signed by Saheed Ambagama, condemns the arrest as a violation of Magira’s human rights and an attempt to silence him. The group is calling on Egbetokun to investigate the arrest and ensure Magira’s rights are protected.
The petition describes the arrest as an affront to democracy and justice. Magira has been detained for over 24 hours without due process, raising concerns about political persecution. While the official reasons for his arrest are unclear, it is believed that his recent resignation from the NNPP and possible shift to another political platform have angered influential figures in the state.
The group argues that Magira’s political actions and strong advocacy for democracy have made him a target. They are urging the IG to act quickly and protect Magira’s fundamental rights.
The Officer in Charge of the crack unit confirmed Magira’s arrest but did not reveal the charges. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Daso Nahum, for comment were unsuccessful. He did not respond to calls or messages seeking more details.
The petition has sparked concern over the treatment of political figures and the state of democracy in Nigeria.
