A six-hour standoff between South Korean investigators and President Yoon Suk Yeol’s security forces ended without an arrest. Investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) tried to execute an arrest warrant at Yoon’s residence early Friday but faced resistance.
Police vans surrounded the residence as the 150-member arrest team clashed with Yoon’s security detail and military forces. Physical confrontations broke out, and the team was blocked from proceeding.
The CIO suspended the operation, citing safety concerns. They stated, The arrest is practically impossible and criticized Yoon for refusing to cooperate.
Pro-Yoon supporters outside the residence celebrated as the arrest attempt was called off. Meanwhile, opposition leaders condemned Yoon’s actions and urged the CIO to try again.
Yoon is under investigation for abuse of power and inciting insurrection after declaring martial law in December. His impeachment sparked political chaos, leading to further instability in the country.
The arrest warrant expires on January 6, leaving little time for a renewed attempt. Investigators may seek a new warrant or other legal actions.
