The United Nations’ Yemen mediator, Hans Grundberg, arrived in the capital, Sanaa, on Monday in a bid to ease escalating tensions. This is his first visit in nearly two years. The visit follows intense Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Houthi strongholds in the past two weeks. These strikes were a response to the Iran-backed Houthi militants launching missiles and drones towards Israel. The strikes disrupted operations at key ports and Sanaa International Airport, which are vital for aid deliveries. Since taking control of most of Yemen, including Sanaa, in 2014 and early 2015, the Houthis have become increasingly involved in regional conflicts, particularly in supporting Palestinians during the Gaza war. Grundberg’s visit aims to lay the groundwork for peace and foster a conducive environment for resolution. Additionally, he will advocate for the release of UN staff and other detainees in Yemen. WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recently visited Yemen to negotiate the release of 16 UN staff and diplomatic personnel after surviving an Israeli airstrike at Sanaa International Airport on December 26.
