Trudeau, speaking from his Rideau Cottage residence, expressed his gratitude for serving the people of Canada, emphasizing the resilience and generosity of Canadians. “Every morning I’ve woken up as prime minister, I have been inspired by the resilience, generosity, and determination of Canadians,” he said. “I have fought for this country, for you.”
Since taking office in 2015, Trudeau’s leadership included sweeping initiatives like Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, strong support for Ukraine, and policies to combat climate change. He reflected on these accomplishments, noting the country’s unity during challenging times.
However, Trudeau’s resignation comes amid growing internal tensions and declining popularity within the Liberal Party. He acknowledged these struggles, stating he would step down after the party selects its next leader through a competitive, nationwide process. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option to lead that fight,” he explained.
One of Trudeau’s regrets was his unfulfilled promise to reform Canada’s electoral system, which he had pledged during his 2015 campaign. “I wish we had been able to change the way we elect our governments,” he admitted.
