The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has addressed the reports of a closed-door meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, fueling speculations about a possible political merger ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gabam emphasized that there has been no official statement regarding El-Rufai or his associates joining the SDP. He clarified that the discussions were focused on a better Nigeria, not just about political party affiliations.
“We are looking for like-minded people who believe in the future of Nigeria so we can work together to improve the nation’s standards,” Gabam explained. He also noted that the SDP had been engaging with various political figures and groups to discuss the country’s future and offer constructive advice to the government to avoid crises that affect every Nigerian.
While no conclusions have been made yet, Gabam assured that when the time is right, the SDP would announce any formal agreements with other parties. He reiterated that the party’s ultimate goal is to ensure Nigeria’s prosperity, political stability, and peaceful future for all citizens.
