IGP Issues Stern Warning to New Constables: Abuse of Public Trust Will Lead to Severe Consequences

In a powerful address at the Passing-Out Parade in Bauchi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, delivered a strong message to the newly graduated constables, emphasizing that any abuse of public trust or unprofessional behavior would result in severe consequences. Represented by the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Mohammed, the IGP highlighted the immense responsibility that comes with wearing the police uniform, urging the constables to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to human rights.

The IGP stressed the importance of empathy and compassion, particularly when engaging with vulnerable members of society. He reminded the new recruits that the role of a police officer requires a delicate balance between firmness and fairness, ensuring that every interaction reflects the values of integrity and justice. The ceremony, which marked a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing security reforms, called on the constables to foster trust and collaboration with the public while remaining steadfast in their duty to uphold the law.

Further reinforcing this call for professionalism, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hamisu Argungu (retired), represented by Ahmed Aliyu, Director of Procurement, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and merit-driven career progression system for all officers in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Argungu urged the new officers to embrace values of discipline and fairness from the outset of their careers.

The PSC also made it clear that it would be vigilant in monitoring the activities of the constables, ensuring strict adherence to the established rules of engagement. Argungu warned that any deviation from the principles of professionalism would lead to immediate sanctions, but reassured the recruits that outstanding officers would be duly recognized and rewarded for their dedication and gallantry.

After completing six months of rigorous training in areas such as counter-terrorism, community policing, and crime prevention, the new constables are now ready to face some of the country’s most pressing security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism. The PSC assured the public that it would continue to uphold the integrity of the recruitment process, ensuring that only the most qualified individuals serve in the Force.

This renewed focus on professionalism and integrity marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s quest for a more effective and accountable police force. As the new constables take their oath and begin their duties, they carry with them the heavy responsibility of upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.
