Anambra State: A New Political Battlefield Ahead of 2025 Governorship Election

As the November 2025 off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State approaches, political attention in Nigeria is intensifying. From the recent schedule of activities released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it’s clear that all eyes are on Anambra, where a fierce political battle is expected to unfold. The tension surrounding this election is understandable, as Anambra’s governorship race is no ordinary contest. It carries significant weight and will undoubtedly draw the attention of politicians, citizens, and stakeholders from across the country.

Anambra, known for its high political consciousness, will see a battle between politicians with substantial financial resources, political clout, and business acumen. The state is unique in that the 2025 governorship election is the only standalone off-cycle gubernatorial race this year, making it even more significant. With the upcoming election, there is the expectation of a highly competitive, multi-horse race, unlike the traditional two- or three-candidate battles witnessed in previous years.

The race for the governorship seat will likely be a four-way contest, involving the ruling party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Peter Obi-driven Labour Party (LP), the federal government-backed All Progressives Congress (APC), and a weakened Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This year’s election presents a rare opportunity for political parties to show their strength and prowess. Recently, INEC issued a crucial directive, urging registered political parties to submit their schedules of activities for the primaries, signaling the commission’s readiness to conduct a transparent and well-organized election. This step follows a tense meeting between INEC and political parties during which parties voiced concerns about past election management. INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu emphasized the need for early preparation to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

For many, the Anambra governorship election represents a critical moment to correct past electoral missteps. The electoral process is expected to serve as a test run for the 2027 general elections, testing the readiness of INEC, political parties, security agencies, and even the electorate.

Political parties have already begun to set their strategies in motion, with the APC leading the charge. The party announced its schedule for the primaries, fixing March 29 as the date for its primary. Candidates will be required to purchase nomination forms, with youth aspirants (aged 25–40) enjoying a 50% discount, and female aspirants and persons living with disabilities (PWD) being exempt from the fee. Other parties, including the PDP, LP, and APGA, are expected to release their schedules soon, further cementing the political battlefield that Anambra is becoming.

As the race heats up, several heavyweights have already emerged as frontrunners. The incumbent governor, Professor Charles Soludo of APGA, is expected to seek re-election, although his position may not be unchallenged. His administration has faced criticism, with several aspirants from other parties, such as Dr. George Moghalu and Paul Chukwuma of APC, entering the fray with their own agendas. They plan to address the state’s current issues, including security, economic growth, and governance.

The political landscape will also be shaped by former Governor Peter Obi’s influence. As a political figure who has gained significant national traction through his movement, the Labour Party’s chances may increase. Political observers are wondering whether Obi’s growing popularity will help the LP establish a foothold in Anambra’s highly competitive environment.

Despite the formidable contenders, the PDP remains a wildcard. While once a dominant force in the state, internal divisions have left it fractured, making it harder for the party to mount an effective challenge against its competitors. Nonetheless, key PDP aspirants will still make their mark in the race, though their success remains uncertain.

Anambra voters are set to play a crucial role in deciding the direction of the state’s future. This election will not only determine who governs Anambra but could also shape the political landscape of the country leading up to the 2027 general elections.

As political campaigns begin in earnest, candidates are already taking to the media to express their views, make promises, and criticize their opponents. This pre-primary period will set the stage for what is sure to be one of the most watched and contentious governorship elections in Nigeria’s recent history.

The stakes are high, and the competition is fierce. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds and the political temperature rises in Anambra State. Who will emerge victorious? Will it be a repeat of past loyalties to APGA, or will the LP, APC, or PDP break through? Only time will tell.
