Govt Begins Sale of Rice to Sokoto Civil Servants at N40,000 per Bag

In a bid to alleviate the current food crisis in Nigeria, the Federal Government has initiated the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Sokoto State civil servants at a subsidized rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag. This gesture is aimed at helping the workers cope with the soaring cost of food items, which has become a significant issue for many families across the country.

The official flag-off ceremony of the rice sale took place on Thursday at the Cabinet Office in Sokoto, with the Sokoto State Head of Service, Alhaji Sulaiman S/Fulani, leading the event. During his address, Alhaji Sulaiman emphasized the importance of maintaining orderliness and fairness throughout the purchasing process. He urged civil servants to ensure that the distribution is done in an organized manner to avoid any disruptions or confusion. “This initiative is designed to help alleviate the hardship faced by workers as a result of the rising costs of essential food items,” he stated. “It is crucial that all beneficiaries follow the proper procedures to ensure a smooth and fair distribution process.”

As part of the process for purchasing the rice, Alhaji Sulaiman explained that beneficiaries would be required to provide a code number, which would then allow them to receive a treasury receipt. This receipt will serve as proof of payment for the rice. “After receiving the treasury receipt, beneficiaries will then be given a collection receipt, which will indicate the time and location for picking up their rice,” he added. This process ensures transparency and accountability in the distribution of the subsidized rice.

The Head of Service also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Governor Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, who has worked diligently to ensure that Sokoto is among the first states to benefit from this initiative. “The Governor’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of civil servants has been instrumental in bringing this much-needed relief to the state,” Alhaji Sulaiman remarked. “His efforts are deeply appreciated by all of us here in Sokoto.”

In addition to the emphasis on orderliness, a Federal Government representative present at the event highlighted the steps that have been taken to prevent hoarding and ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from the rice subsidy. “We will be implementing a strict ‘one person, one bag’ policy to prevent hoarding and ensure that the rice reaches as many beneficiaries as possible,” the representative explained. “Each beneficiary will be verified using their National Identification Number (NIN), and they will need to present a valid ATM card with the necessary N40,000 for payment.”

This stringent verification process is aimed at maintaining transparency and reducing the possibility of exploitation by unscrupulous individuals. The government’s efforts to ensure fair distribution come at a time when food insecurity is a major concern for many Nigerians, especially amid the rising costs of essential commodities.

The Federal Government has allocated a total of 33 trucks carrying 19,800 bags of rice to Sokoto State as part of this initiative. Of these, 65% (or 12,870 bags) will be distributed to Sokoto State civil servants, while the remaining 35% will be allocated to federal civil servants and workers in the private sector in the state. This measure ensures that a broad spectrum of workers in the state benefits from the subsidy.

The rice distribution is seen as a crucial step in the government’s ongoing efforts to support civil servants and reduce the financial burden caused by inflation and rising food prices. The initiative also represents the government’s commitment to helping vulnerable workers by providing them with affordable access to essential food supplies.

As this rice sale continues in Sokoto State, other states in Nigeria may follow suit by implementing similar programs aimed at easing the strain on civil servants and other citizens struggling with the rising cost of living. The success of this program will likely serve as a model for other states to address food insecurity and support their workers during these challenging times.
