The Rafah Border Crossing between Gaza and Egypt is slated to reopen on Saturday, marking a significant development following the release of the fourth batch of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. This move comes after Israel’s approval to open the crossing, as confirmed by a Hamas official and a source involved in the ongoing discussions.
According to the Hamas official, the decision to open the Rafah crossing follows the completion of the fourth stage of the ongoing prisoner exchange agreement. This agreement has been in effect as part of a three-phase process, which outlines the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for up to 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. As part of the deal, the crossing is set to be used for evacuating injured individuals, ensuring a continuation of the ceasefire and the humanitarian corridor arrangement between the conflicting parties.
The agreement specifically states that the Rafah crossing will open once all female Israeli hostages, including soldiers and civilians, have been released. A separate source has confirmed that this would allow for evacuations of the injured from Gaza, in line with the terms of the ceasefire and the ongoing exchange process. Earlier, three Israeli hostages, including a female soldier and a civilian woman, were released, alongside five Thai nationals, though these individuals were freed outside the official agreement.
The ongoing exchange has seen the release of 10 hostages so far, with some Israeli officials speculating that eight of the hostages involved in this phase are no longer alive. As per the deal, Saturday’s release will involve three civilian Israeli men who will be exchanged for 90 Palestinian security prisoners, including nine individuals serving life sentences.
This move is seen as a key moment in the larger context of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the broader peace efforts. The reopening of the Rafah crossing, in particular, offers hope for continued humanitarian efforts and increased dialogue between the involved parties.
