NYSC DG Announces ₦77,000 as New Corps Member Allowance, Effective February 2025

In a landmark decision that will significantly impact Nigerian graduates, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced that corps members will receive an increased monthly allowance of ₦77,000 starting from February 2025. The new stipend, which is more than double the current ₦33,000, comes as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members across the country.

Ahmed made this announcement while addressing the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members in Katsina State, where he confirmed that the increment had already been approved by the government and incorporated into the 2025 national budget. He assured corps members that the new payment structure was no longer a proposal but a reality, pending only the final passage of the budget.

The NYSC DG acknowledged that corps members had long advocated for an upward review of their stipend, citing rising inflation, increased cost of living, and the economic hardship affecting young professionals. He explained that the government had recognized these challenges and responded accordingly by implementing a more sustainable allowance that reflects current economic realities.

He emphasized that while January 2025’s allowance would remain at the usual ₦33,000, corps members should expect the ₦77,000 payment from February onwards, provided the budget is approved as planned. This development, he said, is aimed at enhancing financial stability, encouraging productivity, and ensuring that corps members can meet their basic needs throughout their service year.

The announcement has been met with excitement among corps members and graduates awaiting mobilization, many of whom had struggled to manage living expenses on the previous stipend. The increased allowance is expected to ease financial burdens, promote economic empowerment, and enable corps members to make better long-term financial decisions.

Ahmed took the opportunity to urge corps members to uphold discipline, integrity, and a strong work ethic, stressing that the NYSC program is not just a one-year national assignment but a crucial transition into the professional world. He encouraged them to embrace skill acquisition programs, take advantage of personal development opportunities, and invest wisely in their future.

He also advised corps members to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, urging them to contribute positively to national development through their various places of primary assignment. According to him, community engagement and social integration remain fundamental aspects of the NYSC scheme, which was established to foster unity, national cohesion, and cross-cultural understanding.

While the approval of the ₦77,000 allowance is a welcome relief for corps members, economic analysts believe it could have broader implications for the national economy and employment landscape. Many have suggested that the increment may encourage more Nigerian youths to embrace the NYSC program, leading to increased participation in government initiatives aimed at youth empowerment and national development. Others argue that the government must ensure that funding for the NYSC scheme remains sustainable, especially given the current state of the economy.

The Federal Government’s decision to raise the NYSC stipend aligns with recent policies aimed at boosting youth employment, economic stability, and skill development. Stakeholders have commended the move, describing it as a step in the right direction for ensuring that corps members are adequately supported throughout their service year.

With corps members expected to start receiving the new allowance in February 2025, all eyes are now on the budget approval process, which will determine the actual implementation timeline. Meanwhile, the NYSC leadership has assured corps members that the process is on track and that the increment will take effect as soon as the budget is passed into law.

As anticipation grows, corps members and prospective graduates are advised to stay updated with official NYSC announcements to receive timely information regarding payment schedules and related policies.
