Tragic Auto Crash Claims 30 Lives in Ondo as Two Commercial Buses Burst into Flames

A horrific auto crash along the Ore-Lagos highway in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State has left at least 30 passengers dead, with many burnt beyond recognition. The tragedy, which occurred at the Onipetesi area, has once again raised serious concerns over reckless driving and road safety in Nigeria.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a devastating scene of destruction as two commercial buses collided head-on, instantly bursting into flames and trapping the passengers inside. Reports indicate that a total of 32 people were involved in the crash. While 28 were burnt beyond recognition at the scene, two others who were rescued with severe injuries tragically succumbed before reaching the hospital. Two survivors remain in critical condition and are receiving urgent medical attention.

The Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the accident and the death toll, attributing the crash to reckless driving. Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the vehicles was driving against traffic at high speed, leading to the deadly head-on collision. The intensity of the impact caused both vehicles to explode in flames, giving the passengers little to no chance of survival.

Authorities have moved swiftly to respond to the disaster, with the remains of the victims deposited at the hospital morgue. Dr. Ibitoye has assured the public that further investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

In the wake of this tragedy, the FRSC has once again urged drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, avoid excessive speeding, and conduct regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such catastrophic accidents. Dr. Ibitoye also called on passengers to be more proactive in demanding safer driving practices from commercial drivers, emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility.

The devastating crash has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road traffic laws, improved highway surveillance, and harsher penalties for reckless driving. With Nigeria witnessing frequent cases of fatal road accidents, transport safety advocates are urging the government to intensify its efforts in reducing road fatalities through better road infrastructure, driver education, and stricter law enforcement.
