BUK land crisis: No land is worth human life – Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for peace and restraint among the residents of Rimin Zakara, following a deadly land dispute between the community and Bayero University, Kano (BUK). The dispute, which has simmered for years, recently turned violent, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

During his visit to the affected area after returning from pilgrimage, Emir Sanusi expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, offering prayers for the swift recovery of those injured in the violence. He urged the community to pray for the souls of the departed and for the strength of their families to bear such an immense loss.

“We must pray for the souls of the deceased and for strength for their families to bear this loss. May this be the last of such tragic incidents in our community,” the Emir said, stressing the importance of peace in resolving the crisis.

Sanusi also called on the affected residents to refrain from further violence and allow the legal process to unfold. He warned that violence only brings further suffering to the community. “When violence erupts, it is our own people who suffer. No amount of destruction or bloodshed will resolve the issue. We must work together to protect lives and property,” he emphasized.

The ongoing land dispute has seen both the community and BUK claim ownership of the land in question. Sanusi acknowledged the complexity of the matter and stressed the importance of resolving the issue through the court system, based on evidence and legal procedures. He urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and work toward a peaceful solution.

“This matter should not be complicated. If the case is in court, it must be resolved with clear evidence. We must sit down with all concerned parties to find a lasting solution to the problem,” he stated.

In his effort to facilitate a resolution, the Emir announced plans to establish a committee comprising representatives from all key stakeholders, including the state government, BUK management, security agencies, and community leaders. The committee will engage in discussions to ensure a fair resolution of the dispute.

“We will engage the Governor, BUK authorities, and security officials to ensure justice is done. However, if you have sold your land and received compensation, you must accept the reality,” Sanusi added.

The Emir’s call for peace was further underscored by his reminder that no land or property is worth the loss of human life. “The life of one individual is more valuable than the entire world. We must work together to ensure such tragedies never happen again. Justice will prevail, and Allah is always with those who stand for the truth,” he said.

The recent escalation of violence occurred during a demolition of illegally erected buildings on the disputed land, where a combined team of security operatives allegedly opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to several others. In response to the killings, the State Government, through the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Wayya, stated that a committee would be set up to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
