Reno Omokri Defends Frank Mba and Urges Public Not to Drag Him Into Egbetokun’s Tenure Controversy

In the midst of the ongoing controversy surrounding the tenure of Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-media aide, Reno Omokri, has stepped forward to defend Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba. Omokri, who is known for his candid social media presence, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to clear the air, urging Nigerians to refrain from involving Mba in the swirling debates about Egbetokun’s tenure.

Omokri’s defense comes at a time when heated debates have arisen over whether IGP Egbetokun, who is expected to turn 60 in September 2024, should retire. The controversy stems from questions about whether his tenure should be cut short or if he should remain in office beyond the age of 60. However, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has publicly stated that Egbetokun’s tenure is valid for four years, starting from his appointment on October 31, 2023. Despite this clarification, the tension surrounding the IGP’s tenure continues to fuel widespread speculation.

Amid the controversy, certain social media users have accused DIG Mba, who hails from the South-East region, of secretly working to oppose Egbetokun in a bid to position himself as the next IGP. Some have suggested that Mba’s perceived opposition is tied to an effort to block an Igbo officer from attaining the IGP position, suggesting that his loyalties might not lie with Egbetokun. These allegations have sparked significant backlash and misinformation, causing concern over how Mba is being portrayed in the public eye.

However, Omokri, who stated that he had conducted his own inquiries into the matter, vehemently denied these claims. According to Omokri, Mba is not only loyal to IGP Egbetokun but is also content with his role as Deputy Inspector-General of Police. Omokri went on to share what he described as an “open secret” within police circles, noting that Mba is widely recognized among the police community as one of Egbetokun’s staunchest supporters. This clarification comes at a time when some are questioning Mba’s ambitions, and the public image of both officers is being scrutinized.

In his post, Omokri cautioned against the harm that could result from the growing speculation, warning that such misinformation could damage Mba’s career and create unnecessary tension. He emphasized that the appointment of an IGP is a prerogative of the sitting president and is not influenced by the sentiments or pressure of social media. Omokri urged Nigerians to focus on supporting law enforcement officers like Mba in carrying out their duties, rather than engaging in divisive political rhetoric.

Furthermore, Omokri advised those who claim to support Mba to cease spreading harmful rumors, highlighting that Mba is dedicated to his responsibilities within the Nigerian police force and does not deserve to be embroiled in such distractions. By taking a firm stance on this issue, Omokri has not only defended Mba’s professional integrity but has also called for a more respectful and informed discussion regarding the future of Nigeria’s police leadership.

As the nation continues to watch the developments surrounding the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force, Omokri’s message serves as a timely reminder of the importance of accurate information and the need for public figures to be shielded from unfounded speculations. With ongoing debates about the future of law enforcement in Nigeria, it is crucial that the public remains informed, objective, and respectful of the work that officers like Mba and Egbetokun continue to do for the safety and security of the nation.
