Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to facilitate the voluntary relocation of Palestinians from Gaza. In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Netanyahu endorsed Trump’s idea that Gaza residents should be allowed to leave the region if they choose, though he did not directly address Trump’s plan for the U.S. to take control of Gaza.
Netanyahu commented, “What’s wrong with that? They can leave, they can then come back, they can relocate and come back. But you have to rebuild Gaza.” He went on to clarify that he did not interpret Trump’s suggestion as involving U.S. military intervention in Gaza or financial responsibility for rebuilding efforts. Netanyahu called the idea “the first good idea” he had heard in a long time, describing it as “remarkable” and urging further exploration, believing it could lead to a new future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Since January 25, Trump has been vocal about the prospect of relocating Palestinians to neighboring Arab countries, including Egypt and Jordan. However, this suggestion has been met with vehement opposition from Palestinian leaders and regional Arab nations, who have rejected the plan outright. Despite this, Trump’s aide defended the proposal before later retracting parts of it due to widespread international condemnation.
The ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties, was temporarily halted by a fragile ceasefire. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the assault has claimed the lives of more than 47,000 Palestinians over the past 16 months. As the conflict continues to rage, Netanyahu’s support for Trump’s plan further intensifies the global debate on the future of Gaza and the Palestinian people.
