The National Assembly has adjourned its plenary sessions for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the adjournment during Thursday’s plenary, confirming that both the Senate and the House of Representatives will reconvene on 14 January 2025.
During his remarks, Mr. Akpabio emphasized the importance of ongoing legislative duties. He stated that senators serving on critical ad hoc committees might be recalled during the recess to address pressing national matters. “Leaders of ad hoc committees should ensure their reports are ready for presentation when we return. Likewise, members of conference committees must finalize efforts to align provisions from both chambers,” he explained.
He added, “If urgent issues arise, you may be summoned back to fulfill your legislative responsibilities. Remember, you are on standby and can be called at any time to serve the nation’s interest.”
As the Senate wrapped up its activities for the year, Mr. Akpabio extended his gratitude to lawmakers and offered warm holiday wishes. “On behalf of the Senate leadership, I thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the year. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May God and Allah bless and protect your families. Return in good health to continue your service to our nation,” he said.
He also recognized the senators’ support for his leadership, calling it vital to the chamber’s success. “Your collaboration has been invaluable. This Senate now stands adjourned until January 14, 2025,” he concluded.
Similarly, the House of Representatives, led by Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu, adjourned its plenary on Wednesday. Mr. Kalu urged members of the House Committee on Appropriations to prioritize their legislative duties by commencing work on the 2025 budget during the break.
The adjournment marks a pause in legislative activities as lawmakers join Nigerians in celebrating the festive season. However, the possibility of a recall highlights the Assembly’s commitment to addressing urgent national concerns, reinforcing its dedication to the nation’s welfare even during the holidays.
