Senator Magnus Abe has exposed the widespread anti-party activities that marked the 2023 general elections in Rivers State. Speaking at a civic reception hosted by Minister Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt on Friday, Abe admitted that such actions were driven by selfish political interests, including his own.
Abe, who ran as the governorship candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), revealed that he prevented the SDP’s presidential candidate from campaigning in Rivers State. This decision, he said, stemmed from his support for President Bola Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate.
I did anti-party. I did not allow the SDP candidate to campaign here, Abe stated. He also accused Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara of similar actions, saying both refused to support their party’s presidential candidates during the election.
You were very clear you were with Tinubu. You didn’t support the PDP presidential candidate, Abe said to Wike. He also claimed Fubara did not back the PDP’s presidential candidate.
Abe highlighted that the anti-party actions were not about supporting Rivers or its leaders but about advancing personal political goals. He noted that this situation has now shifted.
The former senator also recalled the 2015 political struggle when some Rivers politicians attempted to block Wike’s transition to power. Abe advised former Governor Amaechi against these actions, warning that they could harm his legacy.
Abe cautioned Fubara that many politicians backing him now are driven by self-interest.
