The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats in the Ondo State local government elections. The results were announced by Joseph Aeemo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), at the commission’s headquarters in Akure on Sunday.
The election, which was held on Saturday, saw 12 political parties contesting for the chairmanship and councillorship positions. Despite the announcement, elections are still underway in Ondo West Local Government Area (LGA), with results pending from Owo LGA.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chose to withdraw from the elections, citing lack of confidence in the credibility of the ODIEC in conducting a fair election.
The contest involved several political parties, including Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Labour Party, Zenith Labour Party, and others. The last council election in Ondo State was held on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of elected officials expiring in August 2023. Since then, civil servants have been managing the councils until this election.
The rescheduled local government elections took place on January 18, 2025, after multiple postponements.
