The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has assumed the chairmanship of the Association of African Air Forces, a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and advancing airpower capabilities across Africa.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Air Vice Marshal Olusola F. Akinboyewa, the Director of Public Relations and Information at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, the Association of African Air Forces was described as a non-political organization dedicated to enhancing collaboration and improving airpower capabilities among African nations.
Air Marshal Abubakar assumed leadership during the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium held in Zambia from February 16 to 22, 2025. During his inaugural address, he emphasized the need for regional collaboration and strategic partnerships to address emerging security threats and build a safer Africa.

He stressed that no nation can effectively combat threats such as terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crime alone, urging African countries to work together in confronting shared security challenges.
He highlighted that enhanced cooperation among African Air Forces is vital to addressing these issues, stating that their collaboration reflects a commitment to finding African solutions to African problems.
As chairman, Air Marshal Abubakar outlined key objectives for his tenure, focusing on strengthening the association’s operational framework and advancing humanitarian efforts.
He emphasized the need for the full operationalization of the Association of African Air Forces to ensure the organization is fully functional and capable of addressing collective security challenges. He also stressed the importance of promoting Africa-led humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions to support communities affected by natural disasters and conflicts.

Air Marshal Abubakar also highlighted the role of technology in modern security operations. He called for increased investment in advanced aerospace technology and training to enhance the capabilities of African Air Forces.
He underscored the value of strengthening strategic partnerships with allied nations and international organizations to improve interoperability, training, and technology-sharing.
In his address, Air Marshal Abubakar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in 2026. He promised a successful and productive gathering focused on innovation and stronger collaboration among African nations.
He called on all member states to remain committed to the association’s vision, emphasizing that unity and cooperation are essential to building a more secure and prosperous Africa.

Air Marshal Abubakar concluded by stating that the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium goes beyond being a platform for discussion. It reflects the collective commitment of African nations to secure the continent through cooperative security initiatives and strategic partnerships.
By fostering innovation and collaboration, he believes the Association of African Air Forces will play a critical role in enhancing the continent’s ability to respond effectively to security threats and humanitarian needs.
