Umar Damagum, the acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for unity and forgiveness within the party to address its ongoing leadership crisis. Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day capacity-building workshop for social media handlers in Birnin Kebbi, Damagum emphasized the importance of healing divisions and promoting cohesion within the party.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflict, with moves to remove Damagum and appoint a new National Chairman, causing rifts among state governors and the National Working Committee. In his address, Damagum urged party members to refrain from spreading falsehoods and engaging in character assassination, stressing that such actions undermine the party’s progress.
Damagum condemned individuals who are amplifying internal conflicts for personal gain, warning that such divisive actions threaten the party’s integrity and long-term success. He reiterated that the PDP is larger than any one individual and called for a focus on building a cohesive and progressive party.
The acting chairman also expressed the PDP leadership’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency, stating that no leadership changes would occur without a democratic process. He warned against using the internal crisis for narrow political interests, describing it as a disservice to the party’s vision and unity.
Damagum urged members to prioritize reasonable solutions over personal conflicts, emphasizing the need to unite and work towards a stronger, more unified PDP in preparation for future elections. The event was attended by over 50 social media handlers from the North-West states, and was aimed at fostering party unity and enhancing effective communication.
