Igbo Presidency: Abure’s Remark Sparks Debate

The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has reignited discussions on the South-East’s push for the Nigerian presidency. His statement that the party remains committed to supporting the region’s ambition has sparked mixed reactions.

Speaking at a Labour Party rally in Abuja, Abure emphasized the need for the South-East to align strategically with other regions to achieve its goal. He acknowledged the unity and determination of the Igbos, highlighting the party’s decision to field Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in 2023.

Abure urged the South-East to rethink its political strategy, stating that while LP remains committed to the cause, broader regional cooperation is essential. He said:

“Before the 2023 general election, I used to believe erroneously that South-East people were not united. But when Peter Obi joined the party, I discovered that the Igbos are the most united, industrious, hardworking, and fearless. However, the Igbos need more realignment with other sections of the country.”

His remarks have drawn reactions from various political figures and groups.

A founding member of the APC, Osita Okechukwu, sees Abure’s comment as a positive move. He supports zoning arrangements that promote fairness in Nigeria’s political system. According to him, every political party should adopt strategies that increase their electoral chances.

“I support any party that is obeying the rotational convention that gives the South-East another minimum of four years before going North again so that there will be harmony, peace, and equity.”

Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, noted that Peter Obi is currently focused on connecting with Nigerians rather than forming political alliances. He stated:

“Peter Obi is getting closer to the people, advocating for good governance and a better Nigeria. His current target is to engage Nigerians on key national issues, including insecurity and economic challenges.”

A former deputy spokesperson of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chuks Ibegbu, argued that all political parties—not just LP—should zone the presidency to the South-East if they truly support fairness.

He criticized Abure’s focus on LP alone, insisting that APC and PDP should also commit to political equity. He added:

“Leadership is not about Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa-Fulani. It should be about political justice. The South-East has been politically shortchanged for years, and if APC and PDP had zoned their presidential ticket to the region in 2023, Nigeria would have been on a different path.”

Ibegbu further emphasized that tribal politics continues to hinder Nigeria’s progress. He urged political leaders to prioritize national unity over sectional interests.

The renewed conversation around Igbo presidency underscores Nigeria’s ongoing debate about power rotation, inclusivity, and political justice. While LP’s stance signals a potential path for the South-East, achieving this ambition would require broad-based national support.

As the 2027 elections approach, political realignment and strategic alliances will determine whether the South-East can finally produce Nigeria’s next president.
