Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ijaws in the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have declared that they will no longer be sidelined, demanding fair representation and recognition within the party.
Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, emphasized that Ijaws would assert their rightful place in the APC. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Obobagbene, Burutu Local Government Area, Orubebe said, “Ijaws will demand what is rightly due to the Ijaw people in the APC.”
The meeting, which focused on advancing the political and developmental interests of Delta Ijaw communities, also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steps toward inclusivity. The Ijaw stakeholders applauded Tinubu for awarding the pipeline surveillance security contract to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited and appointing Ijaws into key government positions, including Dr. Dennis Otuaro as the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and Barr. Bosin Ebikeme as the Chairman of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority.
Key resolutions from the meeting included working together to maximize the Ijaw population advantage in Delta State, securing further recognition and appointments for Ijaw individuals, and ensuring unity within the APC for victory in the 2027 elections. Leaders also pledged to unify and speak with one voice to secure a stronger political presence for the Ijaws.
Prominent Delta Ijaw APC leaders, including Hon. Paul Azorbo Amabiri, Hon. Napoleon Kenerekedi, and others, signed the resolutions, affirming their commitment to unity and political progress for Ijaw communities.
