A New York judge has refused to overturn President-elect Donald Trump’s conviction in his hush money case. Judge Juan Merchan rejected Trump’s attempt to dismiss the verdict, despite the Supreme Court’s recent presidential immunity ruling.
Trump, who pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records, will face sentencing on January 10. Merchan confirmed he will not impose jail time. Instead, he hinted at an “unconditional discharge,” meaning no punishment.
The charges stem from alleged hush money payments investigated by the Manhattan District Attorney. Last month, Merchan also denied Trump’s claim that presidential immunity should dismiss the case. He is still reviewing other motions filed by Trump’s legal team.
The District Attorney’s Office suggested preserving the verdict but skipping sentencing. Merchan refused, saying it would violate Trump’s right to appeal.
Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, criticized the ruling. He called it a “lawless case” and a violation of constitutional protections. “This case should never have been brought,” Cheung said. President Trump must continue his transition process without these baseless distractions.
Trump has labeled the trial a “witch hunt” and vowed to fight back. His legal team plans to appeal the decision, ensuring the battle isn’t over.
With his inauguration set for January 20, Trump’s legal challenges add new tension to an already historic moment.
