A group of Labour Party stakeholders, under the banner of the Alliance for All Labour Party Professionals and Stakeholders (AALPS), has issued a grave warning to Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
The group claims that Obi’s actions have destabilized the party and, if unchecked, could lead to a disastrous defeat in the 2027 presidential election. They accused Obi of lacking leadership and engaging in unnecessary litigation, which has caused stagnation within the party over the past year.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by National Convener, Dr. Blessing Elaigwu, the group stated that Obi’s conduct is a betrayal of the trust placed in him by Nigerians who supported his campaign. They referred to Obi’s role in a September meeting held in Umuahia, where he, along with the current governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, allegedly plotted to change the executive led by Barrister Julius Abure. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) denied them recognition, leading to failed court battles.
The group claims Obi has failed to fund the party, even after using it as a platform for his 2023 presidential bid. They warn that his actions are threatening the party’s future and could leave him politically irrelevant in the 2027 election. The group is calling on Obi to cease his efforts to appeal the Appeal Court’s judgment and to meet with the leadership of the party to resolve the ongoing crisis.
They warn that if Obi continues down this path, it could result in permanent political setbacks, not only for the Labour Party but for himself as well.
