In a dramatic shift in Imo State’s political landscape, Chris Okewulonu, the former Chief of Staff to ex-governor Emeka Ihedioha, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Alongside Okewulonu was Chuma Nnaji, Ihedioha’s former deputy governorship candidate, and a wave of over 3,000 supporters who declared allegiance to the ruling party in a move that stunned political observers.
The high-profile defections were formalized on Friday at the APC secretariat in Owerri, where Okewulonu delivered a heartfelt address. Reflecting on his decision to leave the PDP, Okewulonu cited the party’s diminishing values and internal discord as the reasons for his exit, describing the PDP as a shadow of its former self.
“My decision was rooted in the erosion of the foundational qualities that once made the PDP a beacon of hope for Nigerians. After deep introspection and consultation with family, colleagues, and supporters, I realized that remaining in an ineffective opposition party was no longer tenable,” Okewulonu stated.
He highlighted a period of political hiatus that allowed him to critically evaluate Imo’s governance and acknowledged the strides made by Governor Hope Uzodimma. Okewulonu praised the governor’s 3R (Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Recovery) agenda, noting significant infrastructural development and human capital initiatives that have transformed the state.
Nnaji, who also joined APC, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to lead Imo State towards progress. “We are here with over 3,000 of our supporters because we believe in the vision and leadership of Governor Uzodimma,” Nnaji declared.
Governor Uzodimma warmly welcomed the defectors, emphasizing the symbolic significance of their decision. He likened the addition of Okewulonu and Nnaji to recruiting elite players in sports, comparing their political influence to the likes of football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
“The APC is no longer a party of strangers in Imo. It is the home of genuine patriots committed to the growth and prosperity of our state. This defection is a testament to our increasing influence and the recognition of the good work we are doing,” Uzodimma said.
The defections also included other prominent political figures, such as Paschal Obi, a former member of the House of Representatives, and Tochukwu Okere, who represents Owerri Federal Constituency. Their collective move has bolstered the APC’s ranks, reinforcing its dominance ahead of upcoming political contests.
As Imo State witnesses this significant political realignment, the impact of these defections is expected to reverberate across the state’s political spectrum, setting the stage for a heated battle in future elections.
