Nigerian Navy Arrests Nine Pipeline Vandals and Seizes 408 Drums of Stolen Fuel in Lagos

In a major crackdown on oil theft and smuggling, operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft have arrested nine suspected pipeline vandals attempting to siphon fuel around Tarkwa Bay, Lagos. The operation, which highlights the Navy’s intensified efforts to curb economic sabotage, led to the recovery of 408 drums of illegally refined fuel, three pumping machines, and eight Yamaha 40HP outboard engines.

Commander NNS Beecroft, Commodore Paul Nimmyel, disclosed these details during a press briefing in Apapa, Lagos, stating that the arrest took place on February 10. Acting on intelligence from the Western Regional Control Centre of Falcon Eye Alignment, a surveillance system monitoring maritime activities, the Navy’s Quick Response Team (QRT) stationed at Tarkwa Bay intercepted a large wooden boat carrying stolen fuel. Seven suspects aboard the vessel were caught attempting to escape to the Benin Republic when they were apprehended near the Lagos anchorage.

The operation extended beyond Tarkwa Bay, as two additional suspects were arrested on the same day around Topo, Badagry. The commander revealed that these individuals were en route to assist the smugglers at sea when they were intercepted with a 40HP Yamaha outboard engine. Intelligence gathered from their intercepted phone conversations confirmed their involvement in the illegal operation, as they had been contacted to supply essential equipment for fuel transportation.

Pipeline vandalism and oil theft have remained persistent challenges in Lagos and across Nigeria’s coastal regions, despite increased surveillance and enforcement efforts by security forces. The System 2B pipeline network, which supplies petroleum products to Lagos and other southwestern states, has been a frequent target for oil thieves, leading to massive losses in government revenue and severe environmental degradation.

In a separate operation on February 11, the NNS Beecroft team intercepted 28 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing over 756kg, at Long Jetty, Ibeche Beach. Although no suspects were arrested, as they abandoned the contraband and fled upon sighting security operatives, the seizure adds to the growing list of recent anti-smuggling successes by the Nigerian Navy.

Following these arrests, Commodore Nimmyel formally handed over the suspects and recovered exhibits to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. Issuing a stern warning to criminals, he reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to enforcing maritime security and eliminating illegal activities in Nigerian waters.

“The success of these operations underscores the unwavering commitment of NNS Beecroft to enforce the mandate of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, in ridding the maritime sector of crimes,” Nimmyel stated. He further cautioned perpetrators of illegal oil bunkering and illicit drug trade to desist, emphasizing that the Navy remains resolute in its mission to dismantle criminal networks operating within its jurisdiction.

As Nigeria battles widespread oil theft, drug trafficking, and smuggling activities, the Navy’s continued vigilance and swift response are critical to maintaining national security and economic stability.
