In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly has witnessed a major power shift as Mojisola Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Assembly, stepped down from office, paving the way for the return of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Meranda’s resignation on Monday brought an end to weeks of intense political tension and infighting that had gripped the legislative body since Obasa’s controversial removal in January.
Meranda, who was elected Speaker following Obasa’s ousting over alleged misconduct, announced her resignation during a plenary session. She stated that while she was not a quitter, she had chosen to relinquish her position to protect the integrity of the House and restore stability to the institution. Her decision followed high-level political negotiations led by the Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cornelius Ojelabi, who met with both factions in a bid to resolve the deepening crisis.
Obasa’s return to the Assembly complex last Thursday had already signaled the shifting political dynamics. The former Speaker, who had challenged his removal in court, maintained that he was never legally removed from office. His insistence on reclaiming his position fueled divisions among lawmakers, with pro-Obasa legislators clashing with those loyal to Meranda.
During her farewell speech, Meranda expressed gratitude to her colleagues and the people of Lagos for their support during her brief but historic tenure. She acknowledged the pressure and widespread calls for reconciliation, stating that her decision was driven by the need to prevent further embarrassment and conflict within the legislative chamber.
“It is with every sense of responsibility that I hereby give you notice of my decision to resign as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly with effect from today, March 3, 2025,” she said. “I did not arrive at this decision lightly. Indeed, I took into careful consideration all the integral circumstances surrounding my election as Speaker on January 13, 2025.”
Lawmakers took turns to commend Meranda for her leadership during her 49 days in office, describing her as a hero of democracy. Many praised her decision as a selfless act aimed at preserving the institution of governance in Lagos. Her tenure, though short-lived, will be remembered for breaking historical barriers as the first woman to occupy the position of Speaker in the state.
With Obasa now back at the helm, political analysts believe that his return marks a significant moment in Lagos politics. However, questions remain over the implications of the leadership tussle and the long-term impact on the credibility of the House of Assembly. Observers will be watching closely to see how Obasa consolidates power and whether the legislative body can truly move past the divisions that have rocked it in recent weeks.
