Rivers SSG Warns That Fubara’s Simplicity Should Not Be Mistaken for Weakness

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Dr Tammy Danagogo, has issued a stern warning to political opponents and critics of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, emphasizing that the Governor’s calm and measured approach to governance should not be seen as a sign of weakness. His remarks come amid rising political tensions in Rivers State, particularly following persistent criticisms from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other opposition voices.

Danagogo’s response was prompted by attacks on his role in the administration, especially regarding his decision to sign an official letter inviting lawmakers for a meeting with the Governor. The invitation, which Wike openly dismissed as “useless,” sparked a fresh round of political discourse over power struggles in the state. However, speaking during the commissioning of Okrika Grammar School in Okrika, the SSG defended his actions, stressing that his duties fall within the scope of his office and were neither unconstitutional nor unusual.

“There is nothing out of place for the SSG to send a letter for an informal meeting. It is within my official responsibilities. It is a common practice, and I have done it before,” Danagogo stated.

A seasoned lawyer and politician from the Kalabari region, Danagogo previously served as SSG under Wike’s administration and highlighted that his role then was not different from what he is doing under Fubara. He insisted that his statement was not politically motivated but a necessary step to clarify misconceptions and counter deliberate misrepresentations of his duties.

Danagogo also commended Governor Fubara’s remarkable restraint in the face of mounting provocations, particularly his measured response to the recent closure of the state assembly complex, which prevented him from presenting the state budget. He noted that other governors in similar circumstances might have taken drastic steps to assert their authority, yet Fubara remained committed to maintaining peace and stability.

“The Governor’s calmness should not be taken for granted. Some people think that because he has chosen the path of peace, he is weak. That is a wrong assumption. True leadership is about keeping the people’s best interests at heart, not creating unnecessary crises,” Danagogo asserted.

His remarks come at a time of heightened political discord in Rivers State, where Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, have been locked in a prolonged power tussle. The political battle, which started after Fubara assumed office, has seen various attempts to undermine his authority, including efforts to destabilize the state assembly and challenge his administration’s policies.

Despite the challenges, Danagogo reassured Rivers residents that the government remains focused on delivering good governance, improving economic stability, and ensuring the well-being of its people. He emphasized that Governor Fubara’s approach is rooted in a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to policies that uplift citizens rather than push them into hardship.

The unfolding political drama in Rivers State continues to attract national attention, as many political observers watch closely to see how the power struggle between Wike and Fubara will shape the state’s political landscape. Analysts have noted that while Fubara has consistently chosen diplomacy and conciliation, his ability to maintain control and assert his authority in the coming months will determine the direction of his administration.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Rivers State remains a focal point of political maneuvering, and Governor Fubara’s response to these challenges will be a defining factor in his leadership. Meanwhile, his supporters continue to rally behind him, urging him to remain steadfast and focused on governance despite the distractions.
