The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has declared that President Bola Tinubu will not retain power beyond 2027. The SDP chieftain, while speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, stated confidently that Tinubu’s administration will come to an end after one term and that his party will produce the next Nigerian president.
Adebayo, who has long been vocal about his political ambitions, affirmed that he would once again contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election. His confidence in winning the election was unwavering as he dismissed any concerns about competition within the party. According to him, no political heavyweight joining the SDP would deter his presidential bid.
“Tinubu is going to be removed from power, that one is sure, and there will be an SDP president,” Adebayo stated. He further added, “Let us understand something. I don’t worry about that; everybody who is coming in knows I will run in 2027. Any coward who will feel threatened by people coming to his party cannot be president.”
His comments came just days after the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, formally joined the SDP. El-Rufai’s move has sparked speculation about potential realignments ahead of the next election. The former governor is reportedly making strategic moves to attract more political figures to the party, possibly positioning himself as a key player in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Adebayo, however, downplayed any concerns about El-Rufai’s presence in the SDP, describing him as a hardworking and patriotic Nigerian. While acknowledging El-Rufai’s effectiveness in government, he insisted that his own ambition remains intact. “The reason why I welcome El-Rufai to my party is that I see him as a patriotic Nigerian, hardworking, very effective in an area where we don’t have effective people in government, that’s all,” he said.
With Nigeria’s political climate already heating up ahead of the 2027 elections, Adebayo’s remarks underscore the intensifying battle for power. His assertion that the SDP will take over leadership sets the stage for what could be a fiercely contested election, with various political actors strategizing to gain the upper hand.
